Kia ora and welcome to Balfour School

We are a small, rural, family orientated school located in Northern Southland, New Zealand. We benefit from making the most of the natural local environment and use geographical and agricultural features in our learning programmes. With beaches, native bush, lakes and snow covered mountains all just a short drive away, our students enjoy school camps exploring the forests, mountains, snow skiing, tramping, fishing, boating and learning about the history of Otago and Southland.

Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti arahina o tātou mahi ~ Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work

Principal’s Welcome

Kia ora and welcome to Balfour School!

We are proud to be a school where our whānau and our tamariki are happy and engaged in learning and in our school. This vision guides everything we do - from the way we teach, to the way we connect with families, and the way we support each child to grow and succeed.

We’re especially proud of our newly remodelled school, which offers modern, welcoming learning spaces designed to support creativity, collaboration, and wellbeing. Our amazing grounds include a swimming pool, multiple playgrounds, and plenty of green space for exploration and play - making our school a place where children love to learn and grow.

At Balfour, we believe that learning should be joyful, meaningful, and inclusive. Our passionate staff work together to create a safe and supportive environment where every child feels valued and inspired to reach their full potential.

We are guided by four core values that shape the culture of our school:

  •  Be Respectful

  •  Be Positive

  •  Be Honest

  •  Be In Control

These values are woven into everyday life at school, helping our tamariki develop strong character, build positive relationships, and become confident, caring citizens.

We also believe in the power of partnership. When schools and families work together, children flourish. We welcome your involvement and encourage open communication so that together, we can make your child’s learning journey a truly rewarding one.

Whether you're a current family or considering joining our school, we invite you to explore our website to learn more about the opportunities and experiences we offer. If you have any questions or would like to visit, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Ngā mihi nui,
